Dr. Edward Shadid, Green Party candidate for House District #85

On July 25, 2010, following the GPOK’s 9th Annual State Convention, the Cooperative Council of the GPOK met. After extensive discussion, the party agreed to offer to endorse Dr. Shadid’s independent campaign for State House District #85.

In making its endorsement, the party asked that the campaign make a special focus on discussing Green values (particularly the 4 pillars of the Green Movement: ecological wisdom, social justice, grassroots democracy and non-violence), have a strong local focus, and make a special effort to reach out to marginalized and new voters.

(All are welcome to attend, but our bylaws limit voting to those who have been Green Party members for at least 30 days.)

Agenda items include: consideration of bylaw amendments, local chapter caucus meetings to choose delegates to the state cooperative council, speeches by candidates seeking the party’s endorsement and discussion on how to build the future of the party.

We will have finger foods and snacks at the meeting. Some of us are going to be grabbing supper afterwards and all are welcome to join us.

The Green Party of Oklahoma will be sharing a table with the Dr. Shadid for State House campaign (who is seeking the Green Party’s endorsement of his Independent campaign) at this year’s OKC Pride Festival!

We are excited to be part of Pride, as LGBT equality is a core part of the Green Party platform.

GPOK members are encouraged to come out and spend the day with us on Saturday, June 26th. We’ll have a table with a shaded canopy. Just look for the big GPOK banner. Also if folks are interested in marching in the Pride parade on Sunday, June 27th please email jmb@jmbzine.com. If we can get enough people to sign up, we’ll march with the GPOK banner.

Film examines Oklahoma’s Tar Creek toxic mining disaster

Written and directed by Oklahoma native Matt Myers, ‘Tar Creek‘ is a moving testament to the strength, courage and fortitude of native peoples and ordinary Oklahomans. The film documents the human consequences of the No. 1 Superfund site in U.S, located in Picher, Oklahoma. Because of irresponsible mining and government oversight, the people of that area suffered health, developmental, social and economic effects and eventually had to be removed from the area, often without adequate compensation or means to reestablish their lives, homes and businesses elsewhere. As Myers says in the narration of the film, “Environmental problems are people problems.”

The Green Party of Oklahoma will host this new, independent documentary film, with Myers as our guest, for a special screening on Wednesday, April 21 from 6 to 9 pm at the Norman Public Library, 225 N. Webster. A Q&A session will follow the film.

This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. A donation for the filmmaker is optional but encouraged.
